Summary: Parents may know the names of their children's classroom teachers, but it's unlikely they know the school librarian or what she does on a daily basis. Their quiet, behind-the-scenes work may be their undoing as Beaverton School District considers reducing the number of librarians, who are all certified teachers, as part of a $30 million slice to their $340 million general fund. Half of the district's 50 librarians could be cut, leaving the remaining 25 to cover two schools each.

Relevance: After reading this article, I had a question "Do librarians need teaching license to work in a school? Are their salaries the same as classroom teachers?" It is true that librarians are needed in each school to support students and teachers do their research. It is sad to see librarians would be cut even they just in a little percentage of the whole funding.
We lost licensed librarians years ago. We now have classified staff in that position. I would say our non-licensed librarian is awesome! She works hard and is knowledgeable about how the library works, how it is set up, and stays current on childrens literature. She does a great job. And to answer your question about their usefulness in supporting teachers and students with research - YES! She is super helpful.
