Girl Uses Google Translate To Ask New Classmate To Sit With Her At Lunch
Key Points: The importance to teach our students manners and to be kind to everyone. Teach students that language should not be a barrier, especially with all the current communication technology.
Relevance: We tell students to be nice and kind to everyone but with everything going on, it is hard. Our students need to see and hear stories like these in order to feel comfortable making new connections. I found this story very powerful.
Audience: parents and children
I think this is amazing! I currently have 4 fourth grade students who are ESL and we constantly are using google translate in our classroom. This resource has been so helpful and such a great way for our students to gain the content they need but also to be able to communicate their needs and wants. Also just being able to share with us teachers that they are comfortable in their settings is so special. I had a hebrew speaking student write to me on google translate telling me that even though he doesn't understand anyone the class and his teachers have made him feel so welcomed and he is happy to be with us. Great article find!
ReplyDeleteVery nice article and synopsis. I try to make my classrooms and students aware that all are welcomed to discuss with me or inside the classroom. Technology makes this easier for many students and this article is another case and point! The encouragement and engagement of civilized discussions within diverse communities is crucial and as teachers we need to lead by example and find ways to bridge gaps. Hooray for Technology!
ReplyDeleteAle,
ReplyDeleteI love this! Such a small simple act of kindness and understanding can go so far these days! I adore hearing stories where students are selfless and act in such a way! The use of technology within our schools should be harnessed and used for good, and this is a great example. In the wake of all the drama from the election...this post made my heart happy and gave me hope for our future when all seemed a little dim...thank you! :)
This article was very heartwarming and nice to hear when student are using technology for forming positive relationships with their peers with language barriers.. These days it seems like I only hearing stores in how student are using technology is a very destructive ways. With cyber bullying and student recording and posting everything I feel like I’m constantly policing this in my classroom. This article reminds me that I should promoting my students to use these tools to form new friendships and break any language barriers that they may face.
