This video shows a mother's perspective on how inappropriate it is for her child with special needs to be held to the same standards as his peers because he gets individualized instruction all year at his level. It also shows a classroom teacher who agrees that it seems like the standards are set too high for most children right now but thinks that raising the standards is "ultimately a good thing." He states that in his experience most students will rise to the occasion and often do better than you would expect them to.

  1. I am saying a very loud resounding YES! We should not expect our Special needs students to perform at the same level and be held to the same standards as General education students. We are having this discussion next week at our school. We are going to be presenting the data, and talking about where our students are at, and their goals. What I found is that our Administrator is wanting our students to make a years progress toward their goal. Realistically these students should be progressing at their level. They have an IEP for a reason! I also wonder how on earth does this model stand up with the Mind Growth set. It really doesn't add up. I would love to see us looking at the data to see where each student is growing. Looking at where they are, where they need to be, and then especially focusing on the growth they have made. It is growth we should be focused on.
