Kids With Autism See Big Benefits From Massage

Disability Scoop/ Amy Wang/ April 1, 2015

Key Points:

A massage treatment has been developed that lessens severity of Autism symptoms and is proving to be a valid part of Early Intervention.  This is important because there are very few research based treatments for low functioning children.  Currently the research is undergoing a peer review to see if it can be replicated.  Sensory issues, language and communication and parenting stress were all reduced.

Intended Audience:

Parents and Teachers

Relevance:  As Special Educators we are in a unique position to offer information to parents that ask regarding things or treatments for issues related to autism.  Sometimes parents don't know where to turn and it is a good thing if we can help provide them with ideas or places to look.  In my own experience I have also found that deep pressure massage seems to help alleviate some of the sensory issues my son faces as well as students I work with at school.
