Key Points- At the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, there is a professor who is contesting the Common Core practices we have in our education system. He argues that the Common Core practices are not concerned with the individual learner and students do not master the skills they are learning in the classroom. He says teachers are no longer educators, but "facilitators" of interest groups.
Relevance: We teach the Common Core here in Oregon still, one of a handful of states that still do. Also, in SPED we are taught to accommodate and modify our teaching to the needs of the student, something that this professor is calling for, for all students, instead of a holistic approach to teaching and learning.
Audience: Teachers, Parents, Admin, Education Officials

Common Core is in essence centralized big government, and when has big brother ever been innovative, competitive, or responsible? It forces elected representatives of states, local governments, and school boards to conform under unelected, unaccountable federal bureaucrats. We, as citizens, constituents, and parents lose power and control whenever the federal government forces us to do what it thinks best. Common Core is a good example of power overreach. It doesn't matter whether you agree with Common Core or not, it’s never a good idea to put all your eggs into one basket...that someone else is holding!
ReplyDeleteBob, I like to point out that I appreciate you going with your roots and picking an article from a Wisconsin University. I agree that common core does not really focus on the student and is really just a filler to get students graduate with whatever standards the government seems necessary. It really helps enforce the cookie cutter mold for students and that everyone will learn the same, because we're all the same.
