  • Jacksonville teacher accused of showing up to work drunk under investigation
  • Key Points: A teacher was reportedly teaching drunk on multiple occurrences in Florida. Poor performance reviews and frequent lack of preparation have led to an investigation on the teacher.
  • Relevance: Obviously student's safety is a top priority for any school or classroom. Even though this is an incident still under investigation, we need to be mindful of our extra curricular activities and how it may impact our jobs and students. Showing up to work intoxicated or under the influence should never happen; even how this could occur baffles many people. Nonetheless, we need to remember that our actions inside and outside the class can have direct impacts on the student's learning and our careers. Be safe and be responsible!

  1. So probably not "best practice"! I agree with Alex and the importance of maintaining our professionalism. This is so important to remember with interacting with our students and the school population. In this day and age of Social Media, it is important to present our most appropriate self within our school community. Also, I would hope that this teacher is able to reach out for help and guidance if his behavior is a pattern, which it sounds like it is.

  2. I feel like this is so relevant with the world we live in because so many adult are tempted with alcohol or have alcohol addiction problems and this causes a huge problem if you're an educator and if us becoming future educators this is something we need to consider about ourselves and look into the way we live our lives.

  3. This is so important because kids are watching us. We represent the school community, both inside and outside the building. So we have to be careful about what we do and how we post things or say things. We always will run into students outside of the building, so our demeanor and responsibility is to behave appropriately because we are representing our school and our profession.

  4. Anyone who shows up under the influence should be investigated and excused from the classroom. Thank you for making the point to say that our extra curricular activities affect our relationship with our students and staff. I think people forget that sometime. With all the changes to whats socially acceptable and legally acceptable, it can be hard to catch the distinction of what is appropriate to do in our off time.

  5. As educators, we have a large amount of responsibility to our students. What we do during our free time has a lasting effect on our performance in the classroom. For this purpose, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Similar to the way in which athletes represent something bigger than themselves, so do we as teachers. It is our responsibility to manage our free time and make choices that allow us to be on top of our game and focused in the classroom. It is unfortunate this teacher made a choice that could potentially lead to terrible circumstances. If given the choice again, knowing showing up intoxicated to work may lead to termination, would this teacher do it again? The news clip mentioned this might not be this teacher’s first time showing up intoxicated. This says to me there is a deeper issue that needs to be observed and the teacher clearly needs to seek out help. This is an extremely stressful job and it is imperative we take care of ourselves mentally and physically. When we are at 100%, we are able to better serve our students. We are role models for the many students we have and even when we think, they are not watching we have to believe they are. Students notice everything! Of course, we can still have a good time when we want but, as with everything, time and place is a key factor.

  6. I agree with Anne and the use of social media. We do need to be very careful with how we portray ourselves on social media and making sure we keep our professionalism. Teaching your class drunk is completely unacceptable and undoubtedly affects the safety of your students, which should be the most important thing. Not only this, but the extracurricular activities you choose to partake in can have a direct affect on your career and the people around you.

  7. I think this article is relevant in that teachers needing to remember that their actions inside and outside the classroom can have direct impacts on the student's learning and our careers. Today with social media people are out to just to catch things on their phone so it will go viral or make the news, and are not reaching to help people. I know it is not the student's responsibility to help their teacher, but they should realize that their teacher are people too and are not fallible. If this teacher is intoxicated at work, I hope that this teacher is getting the help that she needs. Plus, this is Florida.
