This article highlights the emphasis put on social justice within the college of education at California State University. The author tells about why these types of courses are being embedded within the graduate level program, and what the professors of these courses hope the up and coming teachers will use the information for. It is felt that taking social justice courses alongside the traditional curriculum will inspire new teachers to also use social justice within the classroom to over time alleviate oppression throughout the country. As stated by one of the professors teaching this new curriculum; “They’re going to increase their sensitivity and their level of understanding of the connection between education and social justice,” Jasis said. “They also are going to acquire specific tools that are going to help them move their curriculum and extracurricular activities into a social justice curriculum.”

Audience: Anyone who is a student within a graduate level program for teaching, and others who may be curious about the social justice movement within the country.

Relevance: This new way of informing preservice teachers is beginning to spread throughout the country. For myself, I was curious as I know others in the cohort are, as to why the push for social justice courses within a teaching program. This article helps me to understand the importance of incorporating social justice within the traditional pedagogy being taught to us for a teaching program. We can all benefit just a basic understanding of why this movement is important for the world of current and future educators.

  1. Jess,

In today's society with all the social issues going on I believe that education is necessary to provide hope for change. I think that the university should be applauded for their emphasis on teaching social justice because that is what our student's experience in the media and in their lives. Through courses like Critical Perspectives we as teachers in training are lucky enough to learn and discuss issues that occur in our country. Overall great article!

  2. The idea of teaching social justice to graduate students is very important especially for those moving into the education system. Hopefully it is or will be being taught at the undergraduate level as well. My favorite quote from the article is: “I am committed to dismantling all form of oppression and to making society safe, welcoming and inclusive for all people.” The reality is if we want to make a change in our society it must begin in the schools. We will not end discrimination or hate, but we can make a serious dent in the ignorance which breeds continued oppression. Prejudice is learned…let’s start un-teaching it to our students.
